Sport has always been about more than scores and trophies. For girls, it’s a lifeline—a place to build confidence, forge lifelong friendships, and discover just how powerful they truly are. Yet, too many girls are dropping out of sport far too soon. If we want to see a generation of strong, resilient, empowered women, we need to act now.
The Drop-Off: Why Are Girls Leaving Sport?
The numbers are confronting:
- By age 14, girls drop out of sport at twice the rate of boys (Women’s Sport Australia, 2023).
- Only 56% of girls aged 15–17 participate in sport weekly, compared to 69% of boys (AusPlay Survey, 2022).
- Globally, one in three girls quits sport by late adolescence (Women’s Sports Foundation, 2022).
Why? The reasons are complex: body image pressures, lack of confidence, fewer visible role models, and environments that don’t always feel safe or welcoming. For many, sport becomes another arena for judgment instead of a platform for growth.
The Ripple Effect: Why Keeping Girls in Sport Matters
When girls stay in sport, the impact goes way beyond the field:
- Confidence & Leadership: 94% of women in C-suite positions played sport growing up (EY Women Athletes Business Network, 2018).
- Mental Health: Girls who play sport are less likely to experience anxiety and depression (The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, 2021).
- Academic & Career Success: Student athletes are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education (Women’s Sports Foundation, 2020).
Sport teaches grit, resilience, teamwork, and how to back yourself—skills every girl deserves, on and off the field.
Representation Matters: If She Can See It, She Can Be It
Girls need to see women who look like them leading, playing, and thriving in sport. The more we amplify female athletes’ stories—raw, unfiltered, and real—the more we chip away at the “not for me” myth. Every podcast episode, highlight reel, and honest conversation matters.
What Can We Do?
- Champion Visibility: Share stories of women in sport—especially those overcoming setbacks, injuries, and stereotypes.
- Create Safe Spaces: Build clubs, teams, and online communities where girls feel supported, not judged.
- Mentor & Empower: Connect young athletes with mentors who’ve walked the path, faced the setbacks, and come out stronger.
- Challenge Stereotypes: Call out gender bias, celebrate strength, and make space for all body types and backgrounds.
The Time Is Now
Keeping girls in sport isn’t just a “nice to have.” It’s a necessity for a more equal, empowered future. At 4TG, we’re here to rewrite the story—one episode, one conversation, one comeback at a time.
Let’s keep girls in the game. Let’s empower the next generation—because when girls stay in sport, everybody wins.
